Currently we are partnering with Habitat for Humanity on the Home Builders Blitz 2012. This impressive campaign is a partnership nationwide between Home Builders Associations across the country with their local Habitat for Humanity chapters to build over 200 homes for families in need and to accomplish that feat in only 5 days! Locally, we are partnering on two homes for two local, deserving families. Both homes will be located in Hiawatha and nearly 100% of the materials and labor have been donated by HBA members! The build will be going on June 4 - 8, 2012. We are still accepting pledges of labor, materials and financial contributions for this project. Please contact the HBA if you would like to partner on this worthy campaign.
The Cedar Rapids Home Builders Association has established a self-sustaining HBA Kirkwood Endowment Fund to help build our community's next generation of skilled workers, and did so in just 3 yrs. of the original 5 yr. goal! For more information about the HBA Kirkwood Endowment Fund click here.
In 2010, the HBA was honored to receive a $15,000 grant from the National Association of Home Builders. This grant was been awarded to Hands on Disaster Relief in coordination with Block by Block to fund tools and equipment needed for their month-long flood restoration project. Also in 2010, a portion of the proceeds from the Spring Home Preview (now known as the Spring Parade of Homes) was also awarded to Block by Block. The fall Parade of Homes charity of choice in 2010 was the Community Health Free Clinic, with our donation providing over $23,000 worth of healthcare!
Using the members everyday expertise, the Association has assisted the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity, the Metro Area Housing Program, Inn Circle, Homes Across America and Operation Build Back for the homeless victims of Hurricane Andrew. In both 2008 and 2009, the HBA selected the Salvation Army as our charity recipient specifically directed toward flood recovery & resoration. In 2006-2007 the HBA was proud to serve as the project coordinator for the Mission of Hope Shelter House, the only 24-hour shelter house in Cedar Rapids.
The Cedar Rapids HBA received the "Outstanding Philanthropic Organization" award from the National Society of Fund Raising executives in 1993 for our efforts with the duck race.
From 1990 to 1994 the Cedar Rapids HBA co-sponsored the Cedar River Duck Race, a benefit for the Child Protection Center of Easter Iowa. Helping the St. Luke's Health Care Foundation to float more than 55,000 ducks in the four years they were involved meant the facility at St. Luke's Hospital could provide screening and treatment to more than 5,000 physically and sexually abused children and their families from 44 Eastern Iowa counties and four states. The four races raised $350,000 which enabled the Child Protection Center to develop and maintain Safe Touch, a preventative program that reached nearly 12,000 pre-school, daycare and elementary students; the Parent Allegiance Program for families living with high stress and the Newborn Visitor Program for vulnerable families with newborn babies.
